The Lesson of Manna Applied to our Lives in Christ

Deuteronomy 8:1-3  All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.  (2)  And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.  (3)  And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

John 6:31  Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat.

John 6:49-51  Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead.  (50)  This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.  (51)  I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.

Moses explained that God taught Israel a lesson about living by the word of God using Manna.

Manna fell in the wilderness for SIX DAYS to feed Israel, and then on that sixth day TWICE AS MUCH FELL for each person.
•    It was supernatural provision from God.
•    God allowed them to hunger and get to the point of being absolutely aware that there was no natural means by which they could survive.

Exodus 16:3  And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

When God provided them with manna, it was supernatural.
•    God taught them that they can depend upon Him to go so far outside the norm in providing them with what they need that He would give them supernatural bread of angels from heaven.

Last week we explained that MANNA fell for six days and on the sixth day fell in twice the amount for every person due to the following day being Sabbath, when they were not allowed to work.
•    Not only was that different, but the manna that fell on this day did not rot or decay and breed worms like it did if left overnight on all the other days.
•    That is spiritually significant when we consider Jesus died on the sixth day.

They received a DOUBLE PORTION on the sixth day.

The spiritual picture is that THE DEATH OF THE CROSS is a DOUBLE PORTION.

Even Jesus called Himself the MANNA from Heaven.

John 6:(57)  As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.  (58)  This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

We LIVE OF Jesus as He lived of the Father.
•    Living from HIS LIFE is what it means when we pray for giving us this day our daily bread.
•    Daily because manna fell every day.
•    A double portion revelation is knowing Jesus did not die alone on that cross, but THAT YOU DIED WITH HIM.
•    Since HIS DEATH is YOUR DEATH, His burial is yours then His resurrection is yours.

When we find the reference where Manna was first mentioned, we see something more supernatural about it.
•    Just as the manna on the sixth day could be kept overnight and not decay, manna was put into the Ark.

Exodus 16:33-35  And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a pot, and put an omer full of manna therein, and lay it up before the LORD, to be kept for your generations.  (34)  As the LORD commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept.  (35)  And the children of Israel did eat manna forty years, until they came to a land inhabited; they did eat manna, until they came unto the borders of the land of Canaan.

That manna lasted forty years in the Ark, and beyond!
•    It lasted for generations!
•    It was incorruptible!
•    Like Jesus when He was changed in body to a spiritual body that was incorruptible.

God said they were given this manna because it was a test and lesson for them.

Why did they have to know that man live from every word from God?

Deuteronomy 8:6  Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him.

It was in order for them to know they had to keep the commandments of God.

And why did they have to keep His commandments?

Deuteronomy 8:7  For the LORD thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;

This says that they had to keep the Law because they were coming into the promised land.

Deuteronomy 8:11  Beware that thou forget not the LORD thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day:

They were not to forget God…

Deuteronomy 8:13-14  And when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied;  (14)  Then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;

Deuteronomy 8:17  And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth.

Deuteronomy 8:19  And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day that ye shall surely perish.

So it kept them aware of their need of God in case they would be tempted to be self-exalted and wind up destroyed.

In short, they were in need of ensuring they remain dependent upon God.
•    Or be destroyed.

When Jesus said we must live of Him, it reminds me of these other words in Deut 8:

Deuteronomy 8:1  All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye may live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers.

John 6:50  This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.

The Canaan Land of Promise corresponds to the KINGDOM LIFE!
•    We cannot enjoy Kingdom living without a dependence upon God’s supernatural provision.
•    Manna taught them the lesson that they are not meant to live a natural life by natural provisions for their needs.
•    God allowed them to hunger so that they would then see more easily how supernaturally He provides.
•    He does not need to use natural means, but can speak a word and supernaturally provide.
•    Similarly, JESUS IS OUR SUPERNATURAL PROVISION FOR LIFE.
•    Relying upon our baptism into HIS DEATH for faith to live a resurrected life of victory over sin is living by supernatural provision.

Romans 7:10  And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.

Paul DIED spiritually by failing to live righteously through keeping law.
•    But getting into Christ’s death, which is a supernatural provision for us from God, allows us to LIVE!

Romans 6:3-11  Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?  (4)  Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.  (5)  For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:  (6)  Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.  (7)  For he that is dead is freed from sin.  (8)  Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:  (9)  Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.  (10)  For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.  (11)  Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Since it’s through Jesus, then we LIVE BY JESUS as Jesus said in John 6.

Many believers know nothing about this entire aspect of the Kingdom.
•    Preachers preach about it and the congregation barely catches it.
•    Saints of God need to catch this message!
•    Entire chapters are in the Bible about it.
•    Yet it is so little known.

Resurrection life is LIVING by the supernatural provision of LIFE OVER SIN.
•    It’s resurrection life.
•    It’s what Jesus meant when he said we would eat and never die.
•    To never die is to have the resurrection life that Paul spoke about in Romans 6.
•    Since we died and resurrected with Jesus, we have resurrection life.

Ephesians 1:19-20  And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,  (20)  Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

The power God raised up Jesus with is TOWARDS US!

Paul said it’s power to not let sin have dominion over us.

Romans 6:12  Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.

Again, why did Paul said to not let sin rule us?
•    It is because we died to sin and resurrected to live a life that sin cannot control any more.
•    But if we do not understand this purpose for resurrection with Jesus, we will not have the faith to know we can live this kind of victorious life.

Start your heart pounding for understanding and revelation of our resurrection Life in Jesus.
•    It requires a conscious awareness of it, followed by putting ourselves into the equation of Christ’s death and resurrection.
•    And then we exert faith that we can live supernaturally like this.
•    THAT IS KINGDOM LIVING!
