RIGHTLY DIVIDING THE WORD
Part 4

Matthew 7:21-23 KJV Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord,
shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of
my Father which is in heaven. (22) Many will say to me in
that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy
name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful
works? (23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you:
depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
JESUS KNOWING US IS PARAMOUNT!
2 Thessalonians 1:7-8 KJV (7) And to you who are troubled
rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with
his mighty angels, (8) In flaming fire
taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not
the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Notice that NOT KNOWING GOD is equated to NOT OBEYING GOSPEL.
2 Thessalonians 1:9-10 KJV (9) Who shall be punished with
everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the
glory of his power; (10) When he shall come to be glorified
in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our
testimony among you was believed) in that day.
Notice whose preaching is believed in parentheses?
We will be judged according to what apostles preached.
2 John 1:9-11 KJV Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the
doctrine of Christ, hath not God.
…I KNOW YOU NOT.
John wrote and he is an apostle…
1 John 4:6 KJV We (APOSTLES) are of God:
Did you say APOSTLES? You are already rightly dividing word.
1 John 4:6 …he that knoweth
God heareth
us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the
spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
Notice IF WE KNOW GOD we hear the apostles.
2 Thess 1 – If we KNOW NOT GOD we have fiery vengeance upon us.
Left off here last week:
Colossians 1:22-23 KJV In the body of his flesh through death, to
present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:
(23)
If ye continue in THE faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away
from the hope of THE gospel, which ye have heard, and which was
preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am
made a minister;
In Galatians 1, Paul said if any man preach any other gospel then
he is accursed.
- So do not be moved away from
this hope.
- Paul said he was a minister
of this Gospel.
- So we have to go to Acts and
see what they preached and ask if we obeyed that.
We will read that gospel word for word.
Colossians 2:8-9 KJV Beware lest any man spoil you through
philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the
rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. (9) For in
him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
Tradition of men will damn many souls.
- Too many will not leave
tradition and social orders in these circles to accept truth.
- Peer pressure is too strong.
- Too many relatives and close
friends in tradition.
- Is it better to be wrong and
go to hell than to change and stand by Jesus and do what is right?
- Not amongst honest folks!
- Some rather be right with
social order than right with God.
- It is each of our choice to
be right with tradition or God.
- I choose God.
Paul warned of great deception.
2 Thessalonians 2:9-15 KJV (9) Even him, whose coming is
after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying
wonders,
We should not care if people can make the keyboard fly around the room.
- We need to compare their
words with the BIBLE!
- We’ve seen many
healings.
- It is real.
- Entire Word is true.
- But we do not trust signs.
- I base salvation on the WORD.
(10) And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that
perish;
They have unrighteousness in them that causes deception.
Why will they perish?
...because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be
saved.
Unrighteousness is when we receive truth and do not love it.
In the spirit realm there will be many signs and wonders, and many have
not a love for the THE TRUTH.
(11) And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that
they should believe a lie:
God Himself will step in and send strong delusion to believe a
lie… why?...
(12) That they all might be damned who believed not the truth,
but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
Three ways to be lost and one way to be saved.
1) Never hear the Gospel. If our gospel
be hid we are lost.
2) A false prophet deceives you to believe another
gospel than what the apostles preached. You think you are right
yall your life and be lost.
3) ALSO NOT LOVE THE TRUTH AFTER WE HEAR IT, and God
send us a delusion HIMSELF! This will allow us to believe a lie
and be damned.
Is that fair? Yes!
- Who knows how many billions
will be lost because they never heard?
- Many will be lost due to
deception by doctrines not preached by apostles, since they built on
wrong foundation.
- So when God sees all these
multitudes lost, when he gets a man of God to you to explain the true
plan and you refuse, He sees that as need for the cause of His personal
delusion to be sent to such a person.
- We get truth and refuse to
love it after so many are lost and never heard?
- Knowledge is a blessing if
you do something with it, but can be a curse if you do nothing with it.
- It is better to not hear it
than to hear it and not obey it.
Let’s love the word enough to obey it and live a godly life after.
- No wonder strait is the gate
and narrow is the way and few find it.
(13) But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you,
brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning
chosen you to salvation
HOW?...
…through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the
truth: (14) Whereunto he called you by our gospel,
Apostles’ gospel.
…to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
(15) Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions
which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
Reject tradition of men (Col. 2:8), BUT HOLD TRADITIONS APOSTLES TAUGHT!
- Whether they personally gave
word of mouth, or received it by a letter.
WE MUST OBEY WHAT THE APOSTLES PREACHED.
A false prophet will not preach what the apostles preached.
- That is the difference of the
spirit of truth and error.
- MUST GO TO ACTS AND SEE WHAT
THEY PREACHED.
JOHN 3:16
We have many scriptures about the same issue, which is a good thing.
- First section is “WHAT
IS BELIEVING?”
- What does the bible mean to
BELIEVE?
- Many miss this.
John 3:1-21 KJV There was a man of the Pharisees, named
Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: (2) The same came to Jesus
by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher
come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except
God be with him.
Jesus never really answers his question as we proceed.
- He redirects the discussion.
(3) Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto
thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of
God. (4) Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born
when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb,
and be born?
Imagine never hearing what we know.
- Never heard of being
BORN AGAIN.
- Only said BORN AGAIN.
- When pressed for more, Jesus
goes into more detail.
(5) Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except
a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the
kingdom of God.
Jesus goes into more detail when pressed.
- But Jesus seldom went into
greater detail.
- The apostles went into
tremendous detail in their epistles, though.
- He only said BORN AGAIN first
and the more detail with born of water and Spirit.
(6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that
which is born of the Spirit is spirit. (7) Marvel not that
I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
He said NEW BIRTH three times here.
- This shows how serious the
issue is.
- THREE WITNESSES in order one
after the other.
- THAT IS SERIOUS TRUTH!
(8) The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound
thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so
is every one that is born of the Spirit.
New birth is like the wind.
- Spirit is as invisible as the
wind.
- You can hear a sound.
- PHONAY where we get PHONE
from.
- Greek involves LANGUAGE.
- A LANGUAGE WILL COME.
- Bit more detail again!
G5456
φωνή
phōnē
fo-nay'
Probably akin to G5316 through the idea of disclosure; a tone
(articulate, bestial or artificial); by implication an address (for any
purpose), saying or language:
- noise, sound, voice.
See people receive SPIRIT and will see a SOUND or LANGUAGE.
- So when we go into the
conversions in Acts let’s see what sound or language occurred
there and we will know.
Born of water and Spirit.
- Some feel water is natural
birth.
- What will scripture say?
- We will see.
If no water involved, then if apostles speak nothing of water, then we
will know.
- So we will let the scriptures
teach us as we go.
- Scriptures will be clear
about what Jesus meant.
- Spiritual birth was discussed
after Jesus said the issue is not NATURAL BIRTH
- We will see in Acts whether
or not water is involved in spiritual birth or not, and whether some
people are right in saying birth of water is natural birth.
(9) Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things
be? (10) Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a
master of Israel, and knowest not these things? (11)
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify
that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. (12) If
I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye
believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? (13) And no man
hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the
Son of man which is in heaven.
Jesus is simply saying HE IS GOD AND MAN.
(14) And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even
so must the Son of man be lifted up: (15) That whosoever
believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
(16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have
everlasting life.
God loved the world and gave his son, and we must believe.
- So many go here and do not
read the CONTEXT before and after.
- They say JUST BELIEVE
- Jesus JUST SAID we must be
born again to enter the kingdom of God.
- So how can it mean we just
believe unless that believing includes a birth of water and Spirit, or
else we have a direct contradiction, and we know that is not so.
- This is the same section of
scripture!
- So what does he mean by
believing?
- Just Believe he existed or
lived or died?
- What is believing?
- Let’s read on.
- Yes we must believe to be
saved.
- But read on.
(17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the
world; but that the world through him might be saved. (18)
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is
condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only
begotten Son of God.
Jesus did not come to condemn anyone but to save them!
Jesus having lived and died and came is the foundation for all this.
- You have to believe in Jesus
coming from God to begin with or you will not go any further, anyway.
- If you do not even believe HE
IS THE METHOD OF SALVATION you are not going to want to be born of the
Spirit, are you?
- You will not want anything to
do with anything about Him if you do not believe God sent him as the
METHOD OF SALVATION.
- You will not have anything to
do with his gospel.
- This shows that the context
of John 3:16 is not really the nutshell of what to tell sinners.
- He is actually saying
believing in Jesus is the foundation that the NEW BIRTH SITS UPON.
Would any of us want to be baptized in the name of BUDDHA?
Would you want to receive the spirit of Buddha?
- No.
- You do not even believe
Buddah is God nor that he came from God.
- To believe in Jesus is just
the beginning of knowing His way is THE way.
- This is just saying that
Jesus is the FOUNDATION upon which the whole system sits.
- He is where you start.
(19) And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the
world, and men loved darkness rather than light,
Revelation of truth is LIGHT.
(19) ...because their deeds were evil. (20) For every one
that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his
deeds should be reproved. (21) But he that doeth truth
cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are
wrought in God.
Honest hearted people will walk in truth when they see it.
- They will change if necessary
and do anything necessary to be saved.
Many have preconceived ideas of what BELIEVING IS.
- So let us see what the BIBLE
says about believing.
John 7:38-39 KJV He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath
said,
Now he starts to ADD things to the requirements for believing.
(38) ...out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
(39) (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on
him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that
Jesus was not yet glorified.)
So he includes BIRTH OF THE SPIRIT with believing.
- John 3 mentioned that before
verse 16.
- He said when we believe the
right way, THE SPIRIT IS RECEIVED, the HOLY GHOST IS GIVEN.
When you believe on him the way the scriptures teach you should
believe, out of your belly should flow rivers of living water.
- This does not contradict what
he said in John 3:16.
- He said believing in Him is
where it starts.
- When Jesus said many things
He did not give the full details of a thing.
- He was right when He said
what he said, but it was very general.
If I told you how to get to Kildonan Place Mall by heading east and say
you shall get to Winnipeg if you head east, that is true.
- But we know that simply
heading east does not include all the details involved.
- Winnipeg is just over 45
minutes east.
- As soon as you leave Portage
eastward you will not be in the mall.
- What I said was right, but
not nearly ENOUGH info.
When Jesus told said we MUST be born again that did not contradict his
words that if we believe on Him we shall not perish.
- It might look like he said
that belief is all you need to do, and contradicted that earlier by
saying we MUST be born again.
- John 7 shows us that BELIEF
somehow INVOLVES receiving the Spirit.
- Receiving the Spirit should
happen if we believe like the scriptures teach.
- Otherwise, we may have
believed, but not in the manner which the scriptures meant for us when
it said we must believe.
- When we realize he was
speaking to unbelieving Jews who did not even think he was Messiah, you
can understand that referring to general faith in Him before you
proceed any further is the idea he is conveying, not that simply
believing He lived and died will save us in and of itself.
- Where is repentance there, if
we only believe he lived and died for our salvation?
We know that repentance is required.
Verse 9 shifts the thought after Jesus explained we must be born again.
In that verse, Nicodemus heard Jesus just speak of new birth of the
Spirit, and asked how these things could be AS IF HE WAS SAYING THAT
CANNOT BE TRUE.
- How can these things be?
- HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE!
- And it is as though Jesus has
to back up even further than detailing new birth of water and Spirit
and get to the basics of whether or not Nic believes He is from God.
- Jesus said, “I am
telling you what I am familiar with.”
- “I just explained the
wind is an example and you cannot see how it can be possible to be born
of the spirit in this way…”
- He was simply saying, Nic,
you have to believe I speak truth, and at least get the idea that I
CAME FROM GOD. After all, you said I came from God.
- Now, get to basics here.
- Get the point that I am sent
from God.
- You can trust what I am
saying about new birth.
- IT WILL HAPPEN.
- I am sent from God to bring
salvation.
- And once you grasp that, we
can go back to what I said about new birth and we can get on with that
issue.
- He is not saying John 3:16 is
the plan of salvation.
- Nicodemus told Jesus he knew
Jesus was a teacher sent from God.
So Jesus proceeded to explain to him about the NEW BIRTH.
He speaks of being born again. Nic. presses him for more clarification,
and Jesus said it is more specifically birth of water and Spirit. He
compares it to wind. a "PHONE" (greek) comes with it -- sound or
LANGUAGE. The greek term implies a language.
And when Nicodemus answers "How can these things be?" we catch a
glimpse of why Jesus went on to speak the words of John 3:16 and how
that was not a plan of salvation like easy-believers think it was.
Nic actually was saying, "Get real. How is that possible? How can we be
born of the Spirit with a sound or language in the same manner wind
blows?"
This shifts the whole conversation back to the original claim by
Nicodemus that he felt Jesus was a teacher sent from God.
- Jesus responded saying that
if Nicodemus is not even able to believe that there is a spiritual
birth that is similar to the way wind blows, then he is assuredly
telling Nicodemus about things that are very real.
- He is telling Nic about what
he has seen and knows about, and Nic is unable to appreciate that.
- If Jesus told him of things
people in the world can receive in the world, like new birth, how is
Nic ever going to learn about spiritual things?
He told Nic that He was indeed the SON OF GOD. He came from heaven and
is IN HEAVEN. Nic already said he believed Jesus was a teacher sent
from God. Jesus had to remind him of that required basis for learning
from this Teacher! Nic seemed to doubt.
So when he told Nic that whoever believes God loved the world so much
that belief in Jesus would save them, He was simply saying Nic had to
at least believe Jesus did indeed come from God before He could get
anywhere with Nic about SPIRIT BIRTH.
It’s like he was saying you have to be born again, but if you
cannot even believe He is from God to begin with because you doubt his
words about new birth, why talk?
Back to JOHN 7.
1) We know that we must believe in a specific way as
the scriptures teach.
2) When you do believe this way out of your belly
flows rivers of living water.
3) That Spirit that will flow is called the HOLY
GHOST.
4) That Holy Ghost was not yet given at the time
Jesus said this because Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Those are four major points!
So no one would experience this SPIRIT BAPTISM until after He was
glorified.
- We know that happened in Acts
2.
Paul deals with BELIEVING in Romans 10.
He quoted from Deut 30.
Romans 10:5-8 KJV For Moses describeth the righteousness which is
of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by
them. (6) But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh
on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven?
(that is, to bring Christ down from above:) (7) Or, Who
shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from
the dead.) (8) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee,
even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which
we preach;
Deuteronomy 30:11-14 KJV (11) For this commandment which I
command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far
off. (12) It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who
shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear
it, and do it? (13) Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou
shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us,
that we may hear it, and do it? (14) But the word is very
nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
This commandment had to be received in order to bring restoration of
Israel.
Romans 10:8 KJV But what saith it?
What is the Old Testament saying?
…The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart:
- He quoted Deut 30:14.
- He is giving the
interpretation of that.
… that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
He said Deut 40:14 is dealing with the WORD OF FAITH that Paul was
preaching.
- That is the commandment that
would restore Israel.
- It was the Gospel restoring
them back to God by way of a NEW COVENANT.
Romans 10:9 KJV That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the
Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him
from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
This is similar to John 3:16.
- THOU SHALT BE SAVED.
- He is dealing with scriptures
that refer to HEART, MOUTH, MIND and BELIEVING.
- Is this saying merely Believe
he existed?
- Or accept Him as personal
Saviour?
- This chapter says nothing
about “Accept Jesus as your person savior.”
- Not one verse is in the bible
that says salvation comes by accepting Jesus as your personal savior.
- We need to keep reading.
Paul will provide all we need to know to not leave us guessing.
Romans 10:10 KJV For with the heart man believeth unto
righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
That does not mean you are saved at that moment. YOU SHALL BE
SAVED.
This becomes clear as we continue.
Romans 10:11-13 KJV For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be
ashamed. (12) For there is no difference between the
Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that
call upon him. (13) For whosoever shall call upon the name
of the Lord shall be saved.
This was all quoted from the OLD.
Isaiah 28:16 KJV Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay
in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner
stone, a sure foundation: he that
believeth shall not make haste.
Continue in Romans.
Romans 10:14 KJV How then shall they call on him in whom they
have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have
not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
Notice he referred to Isaiah about believing, and then explains
that you cannot call on the Lord if you have not believed.
- It’s like Jesus seeing
Nic disbelieve his words of new birth and then telling him that he has
to believe what the man of God says.
Romans 10:15 KJV And how shall they preach, except they be
sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that
preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
What does APOSTLE mean?
- ONE SENT.
- See the hint of APOSTLES here?
- Jesus SENT THEM just as the
Father sent Jesus.
Romans 10:16 KJV But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For
Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
Paul added a whole lot to just believing.
- He said not obeying the
GOSPEL is equated with NOT BELIEVING THE REPORT!
- He said belief cannot even
occur unless they hear about Jesus and a preacher comes so they can
hear about Jesus VIA THE GOSPEL.
- So, we can see that He did
not simply say believe and call.
- There are certain ways you
have to call.
- A preacher has to explain
what the apostles said.
- There are certain things you
have to believe and certain men you have to listen to.
- That means a lot after we
showed how Paul emphasized so much about false prophets and our need to
heed the doctrine Paul and the apostles preached.
Recall the question we said we would ask you?
Whom do we know is sent of God?
- The apostles.
- Because they were the only
ones who were said to be sent of God.
- Only the bible is what we
know as truth, the word of God.
- We have a world full of
claims and ideas.
- We have to compare it by the
word of God.
- Paul said cast out anything
Paul did not preach as gospel.
- So the apostles’ words
are what we base our salvation on.
- Jesus said He would stand
behind Peter’s words – bind in heaven what Peter binds on
earth.
Romans 1:16 KJV For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for
it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to
the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
So it is not just believing Jesus existed and died.
- BELIEF is BELIEF IN THE
GOSPEL.
John 17:20 KJV Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also
which shall believe on me through their word;
Jesus prayed that the Father would save anybody that would believe on
him THROUGH THE APOSTLES’ WORDS.
- The words of the apostles for
salvation are only found in one book.
- Romans 10 says to believe and
be saved, but the context shows it is believing the GOSPEL.
- Romans 10 does not even list
the gospel.
- It refers to it as what must
be believed.
- So we have to find the GOSPEL
the apostles preached and BELIEVE IT.
Mark 1:15 KJV And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom
of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
It is not just believing Jesus is savior.
