MOULDY BREAD AND BROKEN WINESKINS - LIES OF FALSE PROFESSION

Joshua 9:3-15  And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai,  (4)  They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up;  (5)  And old shoes and clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.  (6)  And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal, and said unto him, and to the men of Israel, We be come from a far country: now therefore make ye a league with us.  (7)  And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how shall we make a league with you?  (8)  And they said unto Joshua, We are thy servants. And Joshua said unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?  (9)  And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,  (10)  And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.  (11)  Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.  (12)  This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:  (13)  And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.  (14)  And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.  (15)  And Joshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, to let them live: and the princes of the congregation sware unto them.

Joshua had defeated Jericho with the blowing of seven trumpets and shouting around the walls on the seventh day of circling the city.

He defeated Ai, after having to deal with Achan, whose sin caused their first attempt at war with Ai to fail.

Then he gathered all Israel and read to them the cursings and blessings associated with disobeying or obeying the Law of Moses.

Then we come to Joshua 9.

The city of Gibeon's inhabitants were HIVITES.

Joshua 11:19  There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.

The Bible therefore calls them both Gibeonites and Hivites.
The ruse worked!
But their assessment proved to be incorrect.
And Israel made a league with them, without making one more sure step to determine the validity of the people's claims.
After three days of journeying forward, they came to Gibeon, and there realized that these men were of the city and were not foreigners at all.
Israel was only three days away from Gibeon when this happened.
When we live in the Spirit, we must continue to live disciplined lives.
Discipline is going against the current.
So much has to be done in life to keep things.
And it does not matter if we were prayed up last month and could hear from God so easily.
Joshua was only three days from conquering Gibeon.
If three days speaks of the work of the cross,
Walking in the Spirit is a disciplined life that stays "prayed up", remains sensitive to who we are in Christ, and instinctively seeks God's will about things.
You need to get your heart targeted upon the truths of the Bible and how you are more than conquerors because of your participation in the work of the cross.
When you are dull in the Spirit due to not keeping up your part, then these truths that give you faith and confidence are not in your heart.
Joshua saw these men and they said they were ambassadors.
2 Corinthians 5:20  Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.

And they even talked like Rahab talked about how she heard of israel's glorious victories.
Joshua 9:9-11  And they said unto him, From a very far country thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God: for we have heard the fame of him, and all that he did in Egypt,  (10)  And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites, that were beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, which was at Ashtaroth.   Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our country spake to us, saying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and say unto them, We are your servants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

Look what Rahab said:

Joshua 2:9-11  And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.  (10)  For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.  (11)  And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

"These men must be true believers as well!"
And they had BREAD and WINE BOTTLES, although the bread was mouldy and the wine bottles were broken.
Joshua 9:12-13  This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you; but now, behold, it is dry, and it is mouldy:  (13)  And these bottles of wine, which we filled, were new; and, behold, they be rent: and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey.

The bread WAS hot from the oven!

Looks good!

So they made league with them.

If they were spiritually sensitive, they would have consulted God.
When we are spiritually dull, we accept things that we'd never accept if we were keen in the Spirit and could discern the bad.

Not only is the above all true, but these men were actually HIVITES.
These Hivites (Eve-ites) were apparent LIFE-GIVERS, from a LIVING PLACE, who had food in their hands that looked like bread and bottles of wine, but were actually mouldy bread and broken, emptied wine bottles, with no wine at all.
God gave Adam and Eve power over the creeping things, like the serpent.
The name HIVITES is so fitting because HIVITES or EVE-ITES gives us the thought of the Eve who was "deceived" by the false FOOD.
Don't enter into League with some deceiver who says they are not on fire now, but they still have bread of life!
Don't enter into league with some doctrine or lie that EXCUSES MOULDY BREAD and OLD BOTTLES, either!
These men said they were from a far country.
Matthew 21:33-37  Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:  (34)  And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.  (35)  And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.  (36)  Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.  (37)  But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.

Matthew 25:14-15  For the kingdom of heaven is as a man traveling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods.  And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey.

HEAVEN is the far country.
What kind of bread are they giving?

What kind of wine bottles do they have?

The Bible is trying to warn us of HIVITES, or EVE-ITES.

Givers of false fruit.
But the real bread and wine speaks of the work of the CROSS.
But the false fruit is preaching that gives you no life.

In time, Adonizedek, the king of Jerusalem (Joshua 10), heard of how the city of Gibeon made peace with Israel, and Gibeon was a royal city with strong men.
Joshua 10:1-2  Now it came to pass, when Adonizedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;  That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cities, and because it was greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

So he gathered four other kings and their armies to fight Gibeon.
God forgives our failures of messing around with falsehoods.
Joshua 11:19  There was not a city that made peace with the children of Israel, save the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon: all other they took in battle.

These liars would have been taken in battle as well.
Let's be particular about our bread and wine, and ensure we do not get a counterfeit!

Let's remain spiritually alert and sensitive!
