Read about the tortures that the nuns felt the Lord desired them to inflict upon themselves. This is especially an evil concept since the Lord suffered for us, thus redeeming us completely without the need of our personal suffering. We will suffer persecution inflicted by others and the Lord does allow this at times. But never are we told to inflict torture upon ourselves. The only group of people who did this in the Bible were the pagan Baal worshipers.
1Kings 18:27-29 And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them. And it came to pass, when midday was past, and they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that there was neither voice, nor any to answer, nor any that regarded. It was certainly not Jesus Christ who told the nun to inflict suffer and torture upon herslef because He liked to see her suffer. The only being that enjoys watching people suffer is Satan.
