KEEP THE GARDEN OF YOUR HEART

Proverbs 4:1-27  Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her. shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.  Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.

In reading the Proverbs from the book's fourth chapter concerning wisdom and understanding, something hit me about the garden of Eden.

Watch the similarity in the various points mentioned in the proverb about receiving wisdom and the points noted about the Garden of Eden.

Genesis 1:2-3  And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Genesis 2:7-10  And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.  And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.

Genesis 2:15  And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

First, God SPEAKS A WORD.

Listen to what the Bible says about the WORD OF GOD.

John 1:1-3  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Just like Genesis, we read IN THE BEGINNING. In this WORD was LIFE. This Garden was EASTWARD IN EDEN.

In this Garden, this MAN was to KEEP THE GARDEN AND DRESS IT.

As our congregant Brother Russell pointed out last weekend, the human body is made in a very special manner.

And as Adam was to DRESS and KEEP the Garden, we read that Proverbs tells us to KEEP OUR HEARTS with all diligence. From the Garden flowed a river of life. The first thing the Word was noted to accomplish was GIVING LIGHT! The WORD had within Himself LIFE, and this LIFE was LIGHT FOR MEN.

The Proverb speaks of the PATHS OF WISDOM.

We read about the WAY OF THE TREE OF LIFE.

Genesis 3:24  So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
Proverbs speaks of the path of the just and the way of wisdom.
Proverbs 4:11  I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.

Proverbs 4:18-19  But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

The Garden had a WAY OF LIFE, or a pathway towards the tree of life. The LIGHT that shone in Genesis is like the LIGHT OF THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE GLORY OF GOD found in Jesus alone. IT SHINES IN OUR HEARTS!
John 1:4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Here we read that this LIFE that was in THE WORD, JESUS, is the LIGHT OF MEN.

What was the Acceptable and preferred tree in the Garden of Eden?

And what was the forbidden tree called? John 1:4 said that JESUS HAD LIFE IN HIM. The tree of LIFE can then be said to be the TREE OF LIGHT. Because John 1:4 said LIFE IS LIGHT OF MEN, we can say the tree of LIFE is the TREE OF LIGHT. Two trees.

Two sets of knowledge.

One is darkness, and the other is LIGHT.

One is LIFE and the other is DEATH.

We know the tree of the knowledge of good and evil is death because we read...

Genesis 2:17  But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
That knowledge KILLS.

But look at this knowledge.

John 6:63  It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Jesus' words are LIFE and SPIRIT!

He was the LIFE!

And so we have the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, as well as the tree of the knowledge of the glory of God.
Genesis 2:10  And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads.
As a river of LIFE went into the GARDEN, and then left the Garden in FOUR OTHER RIVERS, LIFE enters our hearts from God! We were created to be EDENS. But you must BELIEVE in order to get this into your heart. The most important thing in your life is to receive eternal life from God. But your heart must receive the oxygen to pump the life so you can live. As oxygen is like BREATH OF LIFE, His WORDS are SPIRIT and they are LIFE.

You need God's word to go to live forever and go to glory one day as much as your body needs oxygen to live.

So you have got to KEEP YOUR HEART.

Adam was in the Garden to RULE EDEN and then THE WORLD.
Genesis 1:28  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
But He was unable to take care of Eden, let alone the world.

Jesus is in our hearts!

KEEP YOUR HEART.

PROTECT YOUR HEART.

Of all the things you protect dearly, make sure you protect and keep your heart!
